Spring Break Mini Adventure--Day Seven--Friday

We woke up for our last day in the wilderness.  Only two meals to carry, and everyone is eager to get back to civilization.  First, we fill up the water bottles.

Then we start walking.

We are out by mid-morning.

We drive into Escalante, pick up the minivan and stop for hot coffee and cocoa. Then it's on to a local rock shop for souvenirs.

Then we loaded up and headed to Green River, Utah.  To avoid any snow in the Dixie National Forest, we took the Burr Burr Trail, an amazing drive from Boulder, Utah back to Highway 24 near Hanksville.  The best part was crossing the Waterpocket Fold.

We came back up Highway 24, got back on 1-70, and drove straight to the Tamarisk Restaurant in Green River.  The boys were told they could get anything they want (except the most expensive steak) plus dessert.  We are all in there wearing uniforms and occupying five tables.  Much happiness.

An older man stops by the leader's table and asks where we are from.  We tell him Boulder, and he says that he was in a Boulder Scout troop 50+ years ago.  He comes around again to reminisce, and on his third stop he gives us a $100 bill.  We thanked him and told him we would apply it to our campership fund.

Then it was back to Green River State Park, where we had reserved a shelter for sleeping.  The wind was blowing pretty hard, so we told the boys they could skip their showers and just hit the rack.  I learned that the Paria crews had gotten out of their canyon and were headed our way but would be late.  They rolled in around midnight, and pretty soon the concrete slab was covered with sleeping bags.
