Our troop is approaching maximum size, and we are facing an onslaught of potential new members. While we decide just how large we can reasonably go, we kicked around the idea of what kind of parents would jump a Cub Scout to the front of the line. Here we go, starting at the top:
- An ER Physician. Having that kind of medical expertise on wilderness trips and summer camp would be primo. We once had a pediatrician father in the troop, and he was wonderful. I once saw him remove cactus spines from a Scout with duct tape, and hiked in Alaska with him as well.
- Owner of an Eight-Seater SUV. Massive vehicles may be bad for the planet, but they are wonderful for transporting a bunch of people and gear. We go to southern Utah every spring break, and have made the trip with someone driving a Prius, but you can't beat a high-clearance SUV.
- Wilderness Chef . Having someone who can work up culinary wonders--and teach other people to do the same--would be wonderful.
- Child Psychologist. Self explanatory.
- Adult Psychologist. Even better
- Geologist. Wonderful in slot canyons and the Rocky Mountains.
- Mammalogist. One of our friends co-wrote a book entitled Mammals of Colorado, and she is a delight to have on trips. I have never known anyone who could glean so much knowledge from a pile of scat.
